An oldie, but a goodie: Peeta is a feminist statement because you can be Team Katniss and Team Peeta. It’s refreshing to have such a strong, brave, kick-ass, courageous female heroine— but what makes her a real breath of fresh air is that Katniss needs love and companionship and relationships. Love is what makes Katniss more than the mockingjay— her love for Prim and Peeta propel the story, and she has to lose everything before she finds herself. Peeta is awesome because he’s everything a man should be— strong, brave, charming, sexy— and yet so much more: he’s sensitive, he’s kind, he’s empathetic. He loves and admires Katniss, and he’s proud to be by her side; I love how he respects her choices. Peeta loves Katniss for the girl she was and the woman she becomes. If that isn’t a feminist statement, I don’t know what is. I love Peeta Mellark because he’s a strong man who isn’t threatened by a strong woman— Katniss and Peeta make each other better, and it’s their love that sparked a revolution. What’s more feminist than that?
